In 1990, Mark moved to Palm Beach County and built McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary on five acres of slash pine and palmetto forest. Since then, the facility has taken in over 4,000 native animals and adopted hundreds of exotic species – many of which are now permanent residents. The Sanctuary even has a clinic and a recovery room where injured animals are treated before being released back into the wild.
Mark still lives at the Sanctuary with his long-time love Aneth, who he met in Tanzania many years ago on safari. Together they care for hundreds of beautiful creatures and keep the sanctuary in immaculate condition.
Guided tours of McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary are available by appointment and are offered Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. While on tour, you’ll see everything from tigers and leopards to red-tailed hawks and owls. You can even visit the reptile room! Several small animals are available for guests to interact with, including a tortoise, parrot, alligator, and a variety of snakes. Just be sure to dress appropriately – close-toed shoes, long pants, and sunscreen are suggested. Tours are $35 per adult and $25 per child. Call (561) 790-2116 to make your reservations!
McCarthy’s wildlife programs give visitors a chance to get up-close and personal with the animals. There are nine animals featured in each program, including a Florida panther and a Scarlet Macaw. Mark presents the animals one at a time, teaching audiences about each species. He also allows students to come up and handle the animal. To date, Mark has performed over 6,000 wildlife programs and has reached over 500,000 students in South Florida. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
