What you should ask Bed and Breakfasts before booking

What you should ask Bed and Breakfasts before booking

Bed and Breakfast Select Registry – August 24, 2015

Whenever you stay at a Select Registry bed and breakfast, inn, or small boutique hotel, you're guaranteed exceptional quality and a unique and authentic lodging experience. Unlike chain hotels, these properties are independently owned and operated, so they operate on a much more personal level.

Take advantage of the size! Because you're only one of three, ten, or maybe even thirty guests staying at a property, the innkeepers and their staff can personalize your visit in ways chain hotels could never do!

Unlike your stay at chain hotels, the best way to guarantee an incredible lodging experience right from the start is to call the B&B, inn, or small hotel directly to reserve your room. You'll be amazed at how making your reservation and discussing your upcoming stay with the owner/innkeeper will improve your vacation significantly.

Even if you've previously stayed at a B&B, inn, or small hotel, you should keep these questions in mind when reserving a room for your next getaway.

Do you have cell phone reception and WiFi?

Many of our properties offer complimentary WiFi. Some of our properties in more remote locations have limited to no WiFi and poor cell phone reception. For some travelers, the idea of getting away from their emails, social media accounts, and cell phones is a vacation in itself!

If checking your emails is a necessary part of your day, you'll be happiest staying somewhere with complimentary wireless services, like the Swann House Bed & Breakfast in Washington, DC. This B&B is located in the heart of DC's Dupont Circle, an exciting area where there's plenty of people and plenty of WiFi internet to go around.

A bed and breakfast in a remote location is wonderful for a traveler looking to completely unplug from the rest of the world. The Trout Point Lodge of Nova Scotia in Kemptville offers this kind of vacation. This waterfront property boasts incredible scenic views, as well as an array of outdoor activities. You'll be too busy star gazing, river swimming, and mountain biking to even think about searching for a cell phone signal.

If you do travel to a remote location, make sure to tell your friends and family your plans so they do not worry when they can't reach you! If you have to get in touch with them, the Trout Point Lodge of Nova Scotia does have complimentary WiFi, so you could always communicate with them by email.

Will parking be available? Can I bring my electric vehicle?

One advantage most bed and breakfast, inns, and small boutique hotels have over chain hotels is free onsite parking. In fact, over 250 of our properties have complimentary parking for their guests. This information is listed on each Select Registry member's page.

If you drive an electric vehicle, then you'll need somewhere to charge it while on vacation.

Currently, Select Registry has over 100 properties across North America with an electric car destination charging station! This means you won't have to worry about Tesla range anxiety when you stay at these properties.

Some of the Tesla destination chargers are located in more remote locations like Oklahoma. In fact, the Montford Inn & Cottages in Norman, OK, recently installed the city's first charging station. "This is the closest charging station to the University of Oklahoma and the first at an independent hotel in the Oklahoma City area," says Montford Inn & Cottages in a recent blog post.

Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?

Beds and breakfasts pride themselves on being attentive to their guests' needs. Over 250 of our bed and breakfasts, inns, and small boutique hotels accommodate special dietary needs and offer vegetarian options. If a property can do this, it will say on its Select Registry member page under the Dining tab.

If you have specific dietary needs, it's important to let the inn or bed and breakfast know prior to your arrival. The sooner they know, the better they can prepare themselves for your visit.

Can I bring my pet? Is there a pet fee? Does the inn have pets?

Most innkeepers live and work at their property 24/7, so some of them do have pets of their own. For dog lovers, this could be an added bonus!

If an inn does have pets of its own, it may have limitations on its guests' pets. This is true for the Inn on First Bed & Breakfast in Napa, California. The inn does allow pets in three of its Garden Suites rooms: the Meritage, Incantment and Heritage Estate. However, its historic mansion (including the Mansion rooms) is a dog-free zone.

Some bed and breakfasts offer specific amenities for their guest's pets! Savage River Lodge in Frostburg, Maryland, has a pet loyalty program called the Lodge Paw Club.

Just like you, your pet enjoys delicious food. Savage River Lodge created the Bone Appetit Menu just for its furry guests. It features treats your dog will drool over, like the Puppy Peanut Butter Cookies and the Mutt Meatballs! For more information on Savage River Lodge's pet offerings, visit its website here.

Other Select Registry properties have pet specials going on during the year. Hamanassett Bed & Breakfast in Chadds Ford, Pennslyvania, runs a Dog Days of Summer special in August. During this month, the B&B's normal pet fees of $25 per dog, per day, are waived.

Hamanassett Bed & Breakfast cares deeply about helping dogs find good homes. From September 1 through the end of 2015, this bed and breakfast will donate 20% of every dog fee it collects to several dog rescue organizations: the English Setter Rescue and the Doberman Alliance.

Is your B&B environmentally conscious?

Over 200 of our bed and breakfasts, inns, and small boutique hotels are green! If a property is environment-friendly, it will say under Inn Amenities on its Select Registry page. Currently, 62 Select Registry properties are part of TripAdvisor's GreenLeaders Program! This means these properties are committed to green practices like recycling, local and organic food, and electric car charging stations.

Always book directly with a property so the innkeeper can personalize your stay to suit your specific needs! If you've only stayed at large chain hotels, you must try the authentic and unique lodging experiences offered by B&Bs, inns, or small boutique hotels.
