What To Do In Charleston, South Carolina

Bed and Breakfast, South Carolina Select Registry – October 30, 2015

Charleston, South Carolina is a beautiful city filled with plenty of historic charm and sweet Southern hospitality. It's also become a serious culinary hub in the South, where all of your shrimp and grits dreams can finally come true! Recently, Charleston, SC took the #3 spot on the Top 25 Best Destinations in the United States by TripAdvisors' 2015 Travelers' Choice Awards.

This is just one of many major awards the city has under its belt. We'd figure you'd like to see it for yourself one day! Here's your personalized travel guide to Charleston, South Carolina.

What To Do

1. Explore Downtown Charleston.
There is so much to see and do in Downtown Charleston - whatever your interests may be. Like shopping? Charleston offers everything from boutique shops to open-air markets to your typical retail stores. Appreciate art? Visit exquisite galleries and then step outside their doors to find street artists crafting sweetgrass roses. If you're a U.S. history buff, there's no better place to learn about the Civil War (by carriage tour!). Charleston's architecture is a feast for the eyes... and its award-winning restaurants are just a feast! You'll never run out of things to do - just wear comfortable shoes and bring your camera!

2. Pack a picnic and head to Fort Moultrie.
Fort Moultrie is a favorite spot for locals for many reasons! There's the actual fort, which you can walk around for a small entrance fee. But then there's also the cannons on the large green lawn outside of the fort, which makes for a perfect picnic spot! Our top two favorite things to do at Fort Moultrie is to sit on the rocks behind the fort and to walk along the quiet beach.

3. Grab a chair and head to one of Charleston's beautiful beaches.
You're welcome to explore four distinct beaches in Charleston, each with its own personality. Whichever beach you choose to visit, you'll find a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the busier parts of Charleston.

Kiawah Island: Rest & Relaxation
Kiawah offers 10 miles of uninterrupted beaches to its vacationing guests and its quiet community of permanent residents. It's the ideal spot for a quiet afternoon of reading!

Isle of Palms: Perfect Family Spot
The Isle of Palms is a great place to head with the family! The locals are friendly, the beach is clean, and the sand is always ready to be shoveled.

Folly Beach: The Edge of America
An eclectic beach town, Folly Beach is a favorite spot for surfers looking to catch some waves! It's also home to several restaurants serving up fresh seafood and cold drinks all day long.

Sullivan's Island: Historic Seaside Village
Both Edgar Allen Poe and the Revolutionary War helped put Sullivan's Island on the map years ago! Today, it's just a quiet island with scenic beaches enjoyed by local families.

What You'll Hear (& See)

1. Y'all
Southerners love to merge words and create new ones. More efficient or just lazy? We'll let you be the judge.

2. Please and Thank You
Good manners are important in the South. You'll probably be called sir or ma'am regardless of your age.

3. Smiles
The term Southern hospitality is not a myth in the South. It even used to say so on the state's license plates!

What To Eat

If you don't live in the South, you've got to take advantage of the delicious, Southern comfort food you can find on every street corner in Charleston, South Carolina!

1. Shrimp and Grits
Comfort food at its best. And luckily for you, Southerners serve shrimp and grits all year long!

2. Fried anything (oysters, okra, shrimp, etc.)
You name it, Charlestonians fry it. Some locals even fry their Thanksgiving turkeys! It's just a way of life.

3. Boiled Peanuts
Salty, delicious nutty goodness in every bite! If you're feeling a little spicy, ask for the cajun peanuts.
