About Allamuchy Mountain State Park

Allamuchy Mountain State Park is located in Byram Township, which is in Sussex County, New Jersey along the Musconetcong River.  The 9,092-acre  park encompasses much of Allamuchy Mountain and is home to the 2,400-acre Allamuchy Natural Area. The park has many miles of hiking trails, both marked and unmarked as well as an open air museum called Waterloo Village. The village was once a Lenape Native American village and then transitioned to a port along the Morris Canal with colonization.  is home to a 19th-century village with a sawmill, a gristmill, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.   Allamuchy State Park is part of the Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion, which is hallmarked  a temperate climate and mixed forests. The forests of Allamuchy Mountain State Park are made up of both hardwoods as well as oak trees.

The miles of hiking trails within Allamuchy Mountain State Park makes it a great destination for hikers and mountain bikers.  There are 14 miles of marked trails for visitors to explore, and more than 20 miles of unmarked trails on the mountain.  The park is split up into two sections: Deer Park and Allamuchy North. The Deer Park section of the park encompasses the marked trails, which are a network that can be combined to create several different loops.  The Allamuchy North area is home to the unmarked wooded trails, that are ideal for hikers with a bit more experience or those looking to explore on their own terms a bit more. There is also a three mile long water trail for kayaking and canoeing within the park.
