Mississippi is the 20th state of the U.S. to join the Union. It received its statehood on December 10, 1816. 1. Explore the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science
Come young and old to this fascinating museum full of creatures of the deep, deep sea and big blue sky. A great way to explore Mississippi’s biological diversity at its best is at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. The indoor exhibit includes a 100,000-gallon aquarium filled with native fishes, reptiles and amphibians. Plus, the two miles of outdoor walking trails that wind through natural habitat are fantastic! The Museum is a must see when in Jackson!
2. See the Eudora Welty House
This historic site was once the home of Eudora Welty, a true southern author. The humble 1920’s house gives visitors an in depth glimpse of the amazing author’s life. Take a tour of the facilities and learn about Welty’s day-to-day life. Hear about her stories, friends, travels, and inspiration. Your eyes will be wide open with wonder! The gorgeous gardens are worth a stroll around!
3. Visit the State Capitol
Patterned after the National Capitol, this structure has been the Capitol building for the state of Mississippi since 1903. Take a 90-minute tour of the beautiful building and learn about the interesting history of the state and nation. Give yourself plenty of time not only for the tour but also to explore the stunning gardens. Well worth your time when in the city!
4. Tour the Old Capitol Museum
A real gem, The Old Capitol building served the state from 1832-1903. The building was later converted into the State Historical Museum. Today, guests can take a tour of the grand building and view dioramas and exhibits that trace the city’s history. The Old Capitol Museum is a great place to visit if you are interested in the history of Mississippi!
5. Marvel at the Mississippi Governor's Mansion
This lovely home is a wonderful place to learn a bit more about Mississippi’s history! The tour guides are very knowledgeable and friendly, showing their pride for the state of Mississippi. The tour takes guests throughout the gorgeous house, allowing them to experience the life of governors past. This is definitely one of best things to do in Jackson MS!
