With the release of the movie, “The Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, the popularity of creating a bucket list has grown. Generally, a bucket list is a list of things you want to do or places you want to go before you “kick the bucket.” This idea has inspired us here at Select Registry, getting us to think about some of the scenic inns that would be essential to add to our own list. While these certainly don’t complete the list, they make for a beautiful start.
Making Your Own Bucket List
In this vein, we wanted to share two of our choices, both of which have their own particular magic, one on the west coast and the other in the heart of the mid-west. If you’re an ambitious bucket-lister, our recommendation: find the time to visit both for two of the most delicious experiences when it comes to getting away from it all.
Let’s start with Northern California, already known for its heavenly coastline and rugged scenery.
There’s a beautiful town called Little River, right on North Highway One on the Mendocino coastline. In this town is a gem of a place called Glendeven Inn. Aficionados of Northern California’s bed & breakfasts know this inn well, as its reputation for being one of the finest in the United States is known far and wide. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing all that Glendeven offers, let us create a brief description here with which to seduce you.
The Beauties of Mendocino
First of all, there’s Mendocino itself. With an extraordinary coastline and magnificent beaches, redwood forests, and the greenest wine region in the country, you are up front and personal with big nature at its finest. We don’t think it’s an oxymoron when we say that this part of the world exhibits a serene wildness, with seemingly never-ending forests, ocean landscapes that encourage whale watching during the season, and precious towns that invite exploration.
An Inn Restored to Perfection
Just a few hours north of the San Francisco Bay area you will find Glendeven Inn. A New England style farmstead erected in 1867, this exquisite bed & breakfast has been restored to perfection. On eight acres of gardens, woods, and meadowlands just above Little River, you can watch llamas graze on the property and then take to the beach or to any one of the nearby state park trails.
Luxury at Its Best
With ocean views from every vantage point, the Inn boasts three main areas to stay: the Farmhouse itself, Stevenscroft Annex, and the Carriage House. There is also a new sister property of full suites and cottages called the Inn at Cobbler’s Walk Mendocino, located directly across the way by the state park. Filled with antiques, fine art, comfortable furniture, and all the amenities one could ever need, each location defines luxury at its best. Many of the rooms house wood burning fireplaces, private decks, and jetted tubs, and each one commands a stunning view of the surrounding landscape.
Titillating the Palate
Enjoy a three course homemade breakfast each morning, served in your room or outside if the weather permits. Evenings bring wine and hor d’oeuvres and is a time where you can meet fellow guests who have stories to tell. You can also order a private farm-to-table dining experience, with locally sourced organic produce when possible, along with a selection of 45 Mendocino wines to excite your palate. Don’t Wait Until Your List is Full!
Chosen as one of the top picks for Mendocino by Travel + Leisure, Sunset Magazine, and Vogue Magazine, Glendeven Inn offers private day trip tours of Mendocino, gift certificates, wedding and elopement packages, and last minute specials. For a vacation like no other, this bed & breakfast is a must for your bucket list, and best if you don’t wait until that list of yours is full!
The Copperstone Inn
Our next pick is the Copperstone Inn in Rockton, Illinois. Located on beautiful Orchard Ridge Farms, this 9,000 square-foot limestone home sits on 130 acres of pristine land. Elegant, serene, and sophisticated, Copperstone Inn is a luxury bed & breakfast that prides itself on impeccable service and an ambiance that exemplifies everything that one is looking for when it comes to getting away from it all. One of the Jewels of the MidwestOne only has to look at the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor to get a taste of what people are talking about after staying at this inn. The welcoming atmosphere combined with an extraordinary landscape makes this one of the jewels of the Midwest.
Designed to Perfection
Just six miles from the historic village of Rockton, Copperstone Inn is comprised of seven luxury suites, each one tastefully decorated according to an individual theme. One of our favorites at Select Registry is the Northwood Suite with its hickory floors and black walnut walls, along with a jazucci tub for two, double walk-in shower, and a veranda with views to die for. Another favorite is the Limestone Loft, which is an original part of the Inn and comprised of period furniture and gorgeous antiques. Picture an antique fireplace, a soaking tub with claw feet, and a double walk-in shower that is the largest and by far the most opulent of all. All of the rooms feature sumptuous beds with exceptional quality linens, with many also boasting vertical spas and private terraces.
So Much to Do and See
A gourmet breakfast is served every morning in the dining room, after which you can take an easy excursion to enjoy the many activities nearby. With great dining and shopping, you can also enjoy the Burpee Museum, Anderson’s Japanese Gardens, and the Coronado Theater, as well as horseback riding, hiking, cycling, golf, and so much more. Ideal for Special EventsAs an additional perk, the Inn is ideal for special events such as honeymoons and weddings. Arrive by horse-drawn carriage to exchange vows overlooking the countryside, and you will have made a memory that will forever be indelible in your heart.
The Best of a Midwestern Quality of Life
Located on the northern edge of Winnebago County on the banks of the Rock River, the Copperstone Inn is filled with rustic charm, reflecting the best of a Midwestern quality of life. You will be hard pressed to find a better place to enjoy time away from your daily life, and we guarantee that you will emerge rested and inspired when your stay is over.
