Pet-Friendly Getaways in Maine

Getaways, Maine, Things to Do, Vacation Tips Select Registry – December 14, 2013

At Select Registry, we completely understand that it can be a hardship thinking about taking a vacation without your four-legged friend. And sometimes you may not even want to leave your pet, thus forgoing the chance to get away for some needed time off. As avid animal lovers, we are always excited when we come upon pet-friendly Inns, and in this spirit, we’d like to recommend five of our favorite pet-friendly properties in the great state of Maine:

Pentagöet Inn

In Castine, ME, this gorgeous example of Queen Anne Victorian style sits on a seaside bluff surrounded by majestic elm trees overlooking the quaint village and harbor. Built in 1894, the Inn is the oldest, original summer hotel in the area and features a three-story turret, gables, a wraparound porch, window boxes, wicker rocking chairs, and abundant flowers. It’s a place that artists and photographers love to paint and shoot, and it’s easy to understand why.

Guestrooms are filled with antiques and collectibles and carry an extra charm with old-fashioned floral coverlets, luxury linens, down pillows, and vintage lithographs gracing the walls. Many of the rooms offer claw-foot tubs and fireplaces, and one boasts a whimsical balcony covered in flowers in summer.

This gracious bed & breakfast offers bicycles and other amenities, including a complimentary breakfast each morning. Enjoy dinner by candlelight with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong in the background, surrounded by antique china and lovely floral paintings. On warm nights you can be eating under the stars, taking in the mouthwatering menu of home-cooked, local ingredients fresh from the farm and waters.

Open from May through October you can take your pet with you to explore the beauties of Penobscot Bay, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, the Blue Hill peninsula, and the Downeast region of Maine. Be sure to visit some of the wonderful local towns as well, where you will find art galleries, flea markets, country fairs, antique shops, and so much more.

The Waterford Inne

This renovated 19th-century farmhouse in Waterford, ME sits on 25 acres of fields, woods, and rolling hills. Here you will understand what life was like back in the day when things were much simpler, as you enjoy a tranquil place that is beautiful in every season.

First you will arrive to the top of the hill to see this majestic Inn set back from the road. Already making its welcome, the inn invites you in to experience the exquisite hand-selected furniture and décor and the modern amenities that grace each of the eight rooms. Each guestroom is created in a unique way, with themes and motifs taking you to different places around the world. Six of the eight rooms come with full, private baths, and the two upstairs rooms come with semi-private baths, which are perfect for family getaways.
The Inn’s complimentary breakfast table offers mouthwatering fare to set you up for the day to come, and at night you can reserve your place for a delicious prix fixe dinner. Featuring one entrée, the menu can be altered to satisfy your particular dietary needs.

A visit to The Waterford Inne brings you up close to nature, making it a fine choice when you chose to bring your favorite four-legged friend. Explore the rivers and lakes, take long hikes in the woods, and spend some hours antiquing and enjoying the local shops and cafes.

Captain Jefferds Inn

This renowned Kennebunkport, ME bed & breakfast is a former captain’s home, built in 1804. From the moment you walk through the red front door you will be impressed by the complete attention to detail that makes the Inn so attractive.

Choose from any one of the 15 exceptional guestrooms and suites, with ten guest quarters in the main house and an additional five in the attached carriage house. The renovated Federal-style home brings you all the amenities you could wish for, including lush bedding, sumptuous terry robes and towels, and high-end bath products.

A complimentary breakfast filled with delicacies begins the day. Plan your activities, whether it’s fishing, boating, biking, or taking that long walk with your furry friend, over your final cup of coffee.

Located in the historic district right near Dock Square, you can enjoy art galleries, antique shops, and some excellent people watching as you relax in a local café. Nearby Kennebunk River offers sailing, kayaking and canoeing, and if you go out to the ocean, you may be lucky enough to see migrating whales, depending on the season.

The Squire Tarbox Inn

This restored colonial farm in Westport Island/Wiscasset, ME sits amidst abundant nature. With fields, woods, and old stone walls the quiet countryside setting is the perfect place to bring your favorite canine.

Listed on Register of Historic Places, the Inn offers eleven beautifully decorated rooms complete with private baths, handmade quilts, and carefully selected antiques. The New England Style rooms in the main house are more formal than the others, with their high ceilings, decorative moldings, and wood burning fireplaces. Rooms off of the Carriage Barn are more rustic, with exposed beams and a cozy, country feeling.

Enjoy the complimentary breakfast courtesy of the Inn’s world-class chef, formerly of the Four Seasons in NY, as well as manager of world-famous restaurants at Rockefeller Centre. Then take off to enjoy all the local outdoor activities as you shed any stresses or worry and feel the bliss of fresh country air.
