Historic Charlottetown is the capital city of Prince Edward Island, and is nationally recognized as the "Birthplace of Confederation".
With such a proud history, it is preserving its distinct heritage through historic streetscapes, parks, buildings, culture and pageantry, local festivals and events. Set against a backdrop of water and gently rolling south-shore farmland, Charlottetown is the largest community on Prince Edward Island. Named for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England, Charlottetown was incorporated as the Island's capital in 1855. Its settlement roots date back even further, to the early 1700s. Charlottetown is alive with the buzz of a modern urban center and has developed some of the best educational facilities, economic opportunities in Canada, and cultural center while still remaining a safe, healthy and clean community.
