Listed on the National Historic Registry, the Inn was once a part of the Winterthur Estate and was named after Alexandria de Montchanin, grandmother of the founder of the Du Pont Gunpowder Company. One of the few remaining village of its kind, the settlement was home to laborers who worked on the nearby Du Pont powder mills.

Thomas Shepherd Inn - Shepherdstown , WV
Celebrate President's Day with a trip through history. Although the Thomas Shepherd Inn was built in 1868, immediately after the Civil War, and George Washington never slept here, the Inn and the town of Shepherdstown are on the Washington Heritage Trail in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia with a rich heritage in Revolutionary War history. The Inn is located in downtown Shepherdstown, walking distance to one-of-a-kind shops and a dozen restaurants. Follow a self-guided historic walking tour available at the Inn. At the Entler Hotel, now a museum and reception hall, troops drilled in the yard in preparation for the 'Beeline March' to join General Washington in Boston. James Rumsey, a compatriot of Washington's, successfully demonstrated the first steamboat here on the Potomac River, before Robert Fulton took credit for the invention. Washington family homes, like Happy Retreat and Claymont Court, are located nearby in Jefferson County. Civil War history abounds in the area as well, with Antietam Battlefield and Harpers Ferry only a short drive from the Inn.
