Savannah is the oldest, most colorful and festive city in Georgia and one of the most important architectural treasures in the United States. The last colony in America founded by Charter from King George, its historical section with its fabulous grid of squares truly exceeds its international acclaim. The historical sites are too numerous to include all in these pages but one must visit: the Owen Thomas House, one of the finest examples of Regency architecture in the United States, the Green Meldrin House where General Sherman quartered during the Civil War, Mercer House, made world famous in Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil; the Telfair Museum, the oldest museum in the Southeast, the oldest Black and third oldest Jewish houses of worship in America, the River Walk and Cotton Exchange, second oldest in the U. S. and Fort Pulaski, another featured player in the Civil War.
Savannah, however, is much more than just a visit to its wealth of historical sites. It is foremost a city of romance, passion, and intrigue, an adult "fantasyworld" if you must. Due to its grid of twenty-two squares which act as natural traffic barriers, one can literally walk everywhere within its mile square historic district. At the end of the day filled with feeding the historical intellect, why not relax with a massage or spa visit before venturing out, again easily on foot, for some great low-country cuisine and world class jazz? A stroll down River Street will bring you shoulder to shoulder with super-size ocean going freighters in this third largest port on the Southeast coast. A carriage ride at night while cooling off with wine or champagne to go just doesn't get much better. Or join the popular Ghost Walk tours and learn of the "haints and haunts" who can't bring themselves to leave this magnificent city.
Often lost in all the history and ambience is the fact that the Atlantic Ocean beaches are less than twenty minutes away and Hilton Head's forty golf courses are all between forty-five minutes and an hour drive. A visit to Savannah just doesn't seem right unless one stays at one of its historic Inns (the second largest collection in the U.S.)
