This Hillsdale bed and breakfast offers upscale lodging in a serene country setting so beautiful, you won't believe it is within easy driving distance of both Manhattan and Boston, in the upper Hudson Valley of New York, right on the border of the Berkshires region of western Massachusetts.

The Federal style c. 1830 farmhouse offers seven romantic guest rooms, many with fireplaces, whirl pool tubs, relaxing soaking tubs or two person showers. Although the simple styling of the decor is in keeping with this historic property, modern amenities like WiFi and cable TV are provided as well. Between the warmth and charm of your room, and the beauty of the gardens, you may choose to spend your day relaxing in the hammock, listening to the birds, and not pull yourself away until dinner.

The innkeeper's breakfasts have been called "feasts" by The New York Times and are the perfect start to your day of exploring our region of quaint small towns and villages and beautiful countryside. The Inn is convenient to many museums and historic estates such as the Norman Rockwell, the Clark Art Institute, Hancock Shaker Village, Edith Wharton's The Mount, and painter, Frederic Church's home, Olana. Many cultural venues are nearby, such as Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony. Live theater abounds - Shakespeare & Co., Barrington Stage and the MacHaydn Theater to name but a few. Modern dance at Jacob's Pillow, choral music at the Berkshire Choral Festival; the list is endless.

And food! The Inn is located in an agricultural region that once was dominated by dairy farms, but now is home to an ever expanding number of organic farms, wineries, orchards, distilleries and breweries. There are many excellent farm to table restaurants. It is truly a foodie's paradise.

The Inn's seven guest rooms are designed to provide you a serene, relaxing retreat. The paint colors are pale and restful; the upholstered chairs inviting, the oriental rugs are soft under your feet and you will delight in details such as the cut & pierced paper lamp shades made by the Innkeeper. Five rooms feature gas fireplaces to set the mood. Although there is much to do in our upper Hudson Valley location, you may decide that relaxing on the property and in your room is the best part of your getaway.

The four rooms in the newer west wing - the Thorsden, Merrill, Van Deusen and Vandercook - all have cable tv and gas fireplaces. Several rooms have small private gardens or patios; two have whirlpool tubs. The Martin Van Buren room in the 1860 wing of the house also has a gas fireplace. All seven guest rooms have pretty views of the Inn's extensive lawns and gardens.

In summer, all the rooms are air conditioned. Spa robes, hair dryers and toiletries are provided.

More about our rooms

Susan Spano, in her New York Times Frugal Traveler column, described our breakfasts as "feasts".  Freshly baked cream scones and local jams start you off, followed by imaginative fruit courses such as broiled pineapple with a lime sour cream sauce and pistachio nuts, or roasted plums with Greek yoghurt and a drizzle of local honey. The Innkeeper's specialties include lemon ricotta hot cakes, malted flour pear pancakes, and mini spinach, sun dried tomato, and hash browned potato frittatas.

Each morning, anytime between 8:30 and 10 am, a full breakfast is served in both the candle lighted dining room and the sun room overlooking the lower lawn and gardens. Coffee is available starting at 7:30 a.m. We will make you a pot of tea from your choice of a variety of loose teas from Harney and Sons. (You can visit their charming tea room just down the road in Millerton.)

Deborah's home made ginger molasses cookies are always available, and in the afternoon, we would be happy to make you a pot of tea, or serve you iced tea or coffee on the screened porch, depending on the season.
