In the tradition of a full service country inn our rates include a creative dinner and breakfast from a very talented kitchen.

As you arrive, you'll thrill at the expanse of rolling pastures and towering cliffs rising above the river. Fort Lewis is a rare combination of unpretentious and unique architecture where every room has a view. In addition to the main Lodge there are three "in the round" silo bedrooms, four hand-hewn log cabins with stone fireplaces, and Riverside House which are perfect for a true country getaway. Evenings are highlighted by contemporry American-style cuisine served in the historic Lewis Gristmill.

Like most country inns, we trade in a change of pace, romance and exceptional fare. But over the years, we've come to understand that Fort Lewis has an asset that very few others have. Our wilderness - the mountains, forests, fields and streams and all the creatures that call this their home.

Exceptional Comfort

Today the 3,200-acre mountain farm once known as Fort Lewis Plantation has remained relatively unchanged over its 200 year history. Our accommodations, all with modern amenities, are reminiscent of the charm of those simpler times.

The presentation is authentic, the atmosphere informal, and concern for your comfort and enjoyment genuine. Fort Lewis is a rare combination of unpretentious elegance and unique architecture.

All rates include a modern yet still "comfort based" dinner and a hearty breakfast to start your day.

The Main Lodge and Silo

Spacious rooms in the main lodge are furnished in a Shaker-style tradition, and the common room is a wonderful gathering place for planning the day's activities. At the center of it all an attached glazed-tile silo has been renovated with a spiral staircase leading to three very private bedrooms-in-the-round.

Historic Log Cabins

Rekindle the pioneer spirit. Guests can choose an historical, hand-hewn log cabin. These one bedroom cabins feature Bob Timberlake furnishings, as well as large stone wood burning fireplaces and rocking porches. The cabins capture the bold, adventurous spirit of the pioneer and the exacting, time honored, skills of the artisan.

Riverside House

One of Fort Lewis's happy surprises is Riverside House, a short three minute drive away, on the upper tract.  Peaceful and secluded, it offers all of the amenities of the lodge with an added bonus, a picturesque view of the river and some of the finest fishing on the grounds.  Hugged with porches, it has ample areas to enjoy the scenery or to just curl up with a good book.  The spacious guest rooms are elegant and feature individual bathrooms.  For the purist, spring water flows fresh from the tap.

"It's my Shangri-la, a unique place that I recommend enthusiatically. My dictionary dfines Shangri-la as a remote, idyllic hideway where life approaches perfection. For me, that's Fort Lewis Lodge."

More about on our rooms

A few steps from the lodge is the magnificently restored 19th century Lewis Grist Mill where a most delightful surprise awaits you. A cuisine that rivals the finest restaurants in the largest cities. "There are no bounderies. I'm doing what I want to do with influences from all over," says Caryl Cowden of her contemporary American style cooking.  This vibrant mix of fresh tastes and interesting menus is enhanced by numerous side dishes comprised of vegetables just plucked from the farm's own gardens, fresh breads and sumptuous desserts that have developed a reputation of their own among inn-goers.

At Lewis Mill, anticipation begins during the twilight social hour at Buck's Bar on the porch overlooking the colorfully landscaped fish pond. Guests enjoy ice cold beer and wine while comparing notes on their day afield. John tends marinated beef, chicken, ribs, or fresh seafood sizzling on the grills while heavenly aromas waft from the kitchen.

"We didn't bring much - old bathing suits, sensible shoes, tons to read and expand-o-waist pants to accommodate fresh-from-the-garden cooking. Eating is a recreational activity here. Believe me."

More on what to do at our inn

The spectacular new Pavilion, with soaring beams overhead, provides an informal open space for everything from business meetings to family reunions with  dancing and music.

Mid-week gatherings of like minded enthusiasts are common themes. Throughout the season the Lodge plays host to car and motorcycle touring clubs, artists retreats, fishermen, birders and hikers.

But, in the end, we remain a place where you can simply leave the familiar sights and sounds of your other life behind. Where you can wander and read and sit out and watch the mist rise off the river.
