World-famous Longwood Gardens comprises over 1100 acres with mammoth indoor conservatories.  Garden and conservatory displays change seasonally, from spectacular spring blooms, brilliant Autumn Colors, an enchanting array of Christmas lights beginning in late November, to the Orchid Extravaganza from late January thru March.  During the summer months Longwood presents Concerts Under the Stars and the Festival of Fountains, which combines fireworks and fountain displays set to music of  well-known artists from every genre (recent displays featured the Beatles and Gershwin). 

The Brandywine River Museum is home to the art work of three generations of Wyeths, including N.C., Andrew, and Jaimie.  On many afternoons, Victoria Wyeth leads visitors through the collection providing intimate insights into her family's work and inspirations.  A few minutes from the museum is the historic Brandywine Battlefield, where Generals Washington and Lafayette fought the British before retreating to Valley Forge for the winter.

Winterthur is the 1000 acre Estate and Gardens of Henry Francis du Pont.  The exhibition galleries and 175 period rooms in the mansion showcase a world-renowned collection of furniture and decorative arts.  Winterthur offers mansion and garden tours, and hosts a series of events during the year including the annual Point-to-Point steeplechase race in early May, and a step-back-in-time Yuletide tour of the mansion bedecked in period holiday finery.

The Hagley Museum, located on 235 acres along the banks of the Brandywine River, is the site of the gunpowder works founded by E.I. du Pont in 1802.  Visitors can tour the du Pont ancestral home, which is filled with antiques, memorabilia, and artwork; stroll through magnificent gardens; and view the workings of the gunpowder factory.  A short drive away is the Delaware Art Museum, which features an extensive collection of American art from the 19th century and the largest collection of 19th century British Pre-Raphaelite art in the United States.

The Nemours Mansion and Gardens, also a du Pont estate, was completed in 1910.  It remains today the grandest residence in Delaware and its formal French Garden is considered the finest example in North America.  The 47,000 square foot mansion is furnished with an eclectic collection of rare furniture and great works of art. 

If this is not enough, the Brandywine Valley is also home to wineries that offer tastings throughout the year, scenic back roads for driving adventures, an array of first-class golf courses, and -- of course -- a diverse selection of fine dining.  If your getaway brings you to the Brandywine Valley on the weekend after Labor Day, consider stopping by the annual Mushroom Festival in nearby Kennett Square (the "Mushroom Capital of the World").
