One of the few remaining original country inns in the region, this classic hostelry opened its doors in July 1884, despite a plague of grasshoppers devouring its way across a drought-stricken county! Located in the middle of a lovely mile-long street, the Deerfield Inn is still the centerpiece of Old Deerfield with 11 individually decorated rooms in the main inn, and 13 in the carriage house. Champney’s Restaurant & Tavern uses fresh area produce in market-driven menus. Our convivial tavern features 101 martinis, dozens of domestic and imported beers, handcrafted local beers on tap, good single malts, and a great wine list. A National Historic Landmark, this unspoiled 350-year old village is a perfect destination for those looking for the real New England. Enjoy Deerfield's museums, farmland, events, country walks, friendly folk, and beautiful scenery. We look forward to welcoming you here….

More about on our rooms

Champney’s Restaurant & Tavern at the Deerfield Inn is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to our house guests and visitors. We were a founding member of the regional locavore movement, and are committed to purchasing as much area produce as possible for our menus. If it’s fresh it tastes better, and if it’s local, we can help keep this part of northwestern Massachusetts known as The Happy Valley verdant and productive for our area farmers.

In 1925, travel writer Mary Harrod Northend toured around a number of historic New England inns to “delve into the misty past.” One of her stops was the Deerfield Inn, where she remarks in We Visit Old Inns on the Inn’s large, roomy dining room, its colonial style, and the interesting fact that she was served with food from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century – the inn’s plan being to offer the kind of fare that would have been “partaken of in the old days.”

Another brochure from the 30s mentions tables supplied with produce from adjoining farms, fresh every day, and all home cooked. Plus ça change……..! We think that good food, simply prepared, with the minimum of handling and fussing makes for the best cuisine. Keep it fresh, keep it made to order, keep it creative and interesting. We have farmers who bring the produce they have not sold at the market to our back door, so we might have fiddleheads, peppers, squashes, wild mushrooms, peaches, or plums on any given night to work with to make something instant and fresh.

Have you ever heard of switchel? Our children sell it, along with lemonade, outside our house for 25 cents a glass.
