The 1867 Federalist New England farmhouse was built by Isaiah Stevens for his family who traversed the continent through the Isthmus of Panama. Originally from Maine, the Stevens family was among the founding pioneers of Little River, which is one and a half miles south of Mendocino.

The Stevenscroft Annex and Glendeven Gallery were built in the 1980's by Jan and Janet de Vries, who arrived in Little River from Portland in 1977. Under their ownership Glendeven developed into one of Mendocino's most friendly, comfortable country inns.

Sharon and Higgins, who became the proprietors of Glendeven in the Spring of 1999, are continuing the traditions and adding their personal touches to enhance the experience.
They opened the Carriage House, a spacious, private, 2-room suite with two fireplaces, deck and 2-person shower in July 1999.

In the Fall of 1999, a backup electrical generator, capable of powering the entire Glendeven complex, was installed. It starts up automatically whenever the regular electrical service is interrupted and runs quietly enough that guests in the room closest to it have slept through blackouts without noticing its presence.

An art gallery, featuring contempory paintings, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and photography is on the first floor of the old barn. Run by a group of ten local artists, pARTners Gallery is open Thursdays - Mondays, 10:00am - 5:00pm.

The mood is one of casual elegance at Glendeven. Rooms are light, spacious and inviting. The decor is exhilarating and blends fine crafted antiques with well chosen contemporary arts and crafts. All accommodations include private baths; most have fireplaces.

Whether you come to savor the beauty of California's North Coast, to seek personal quiet time, or simply create and celebrate a memory with another, you will find the hospitality and warmth of Glendeven a very special time and place away! Golf, hiking, biking, canoeing, horseback riding and tennis are available nearby.
