History

A Bit of History
The term tavern once defined what we now consider an inn, and in fact was not considered strictly a drinking establishment until after the repeal of the prohibition laws in the United States, at which point it displaced 'saloon' in many areas.
In its earliest stage, when the population of Hancock had grown to a grand total of 634, the Inn was operated as a tavern - in the original sense of the word - by a man named Noah Wheeler. The Revolutionary War was still a vivid memory in the minds of the townspeople and travelers alike, having ended just six years earlier. The tavern was a place of celebration, dining, boardgame playing and relaxed conversation, and a welcome stopover for those traveling by coach and horseback.

The Inn Today
The tavern remains an integral part of the inn, a cozy room where guests can relax and play a game of checkers on a board used hundreds of years ago in the very same setting, and obtain the finest foods and imbibements.
