- Historic Sites: In early nineteenth century America, Washington County became a hub of trade
and goods exchange between the East Coast and western farmlands. Goods were
transported from the Chesapeake Bay across the Appalachian Mountains and into
the Ohio Valley. This is where the idea to create the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal,
later called the C&O Canal, was born. The Canal began in Georgetown in
1828 and stretched 83 miles through Washington County 25 years later.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Maryland emerged as a border state with
citizens divided between support for the North and the South. Washington County
was occupied by troops on both sides for four of the five years of the war.
Escaped slaves sought refuge in Washington County, but were often caught and
turned in by confederate sympathizers. The single bloodiest day of the war
occurred in Anteitam, MD on September 17th, 1862.
After the war, in 1872 nearly 3,000 confederate casualties from the Maryland
Campaign of 1862 were moved from temporary graves to cemeteries in Fredrick,
Shepherdstown, and Hagerstown.
