History

Built on the site of the first business in West Dover, Vermont, a saw mill, the Winston Farm was purchased by the Williams family in 1967 and was originally intended to be their personal ski retreat. They decided almost immediately to leave their home and business in Atlantic City and go into the Inn business in Mount Snow,Vermont.

As Rod and Ione Williams have explained many times to their guests, "Who were we to invade a field so foreign to our professions of architecture and interior design? Many of our guidelines were our own responses to the many inns we had previously visited. We have tried to capture and mold what we most enjoyed from each of them."

The Inn at Sawmill Farm, opened with nine guest rooms, a living room, kitchen and one dining room. Ione ran the kitchen and did the books, and Rod took care of the dining room and guests. The family lived in the original farmhouse, which has since been converted into four additional guest rooms. Two years later, upon his graduation from college, their son, Brill joined them and eventually took over the kitchen. He is now the chef-owner.

The years have seen the addition of more dining space, office space, a cozy, copper-topped bar, and more guest rooms. There are two ponds for trout fishing, an outdoor pool, two gazebos and a tennis court.

As Ione says, "the Inn at Sawmill Farm at Mount Snow, has survived the events of the years and we have been growing; not particularly in size because we enjoy the intimacy of a small inn, but we have been active each year with additions and improvements. However, the personality of the Inn is still pretty much the same. We still like to think of our Inn as unpretentious, but curiously sophisticated." We welcome you to visit us on your next trip to Mount Snow.
