  • Antietam: Antietam battlefield is a quietly moving memorial to the bloodiest day in our nation's history; several special events happen there, like the luminary tour, over the course of the year.  Antietam is about 3.5 miles from Shepherdstown.
  • Harpers Ferry: Harpers Ferry has wonderful vistas and a collection of small museums created within original buildings.  Harpers Ferry is about 9 miles from Shepherdstown.
  • Charles Town: The court house where John Brown was tried is in Charles Town.  Charles Town is about 9 miles from Shepherdstown.
  • Battle of Shepherdstown: The battle of Shepherdstown, the most significant Civil War battle fought in what is now West Virginia, occurred at the ford across the Potomac known as Packhorse Ford, which is 1 mile downstream from Shepherdstown.
  • Entler Hotel & Museum: The Entler Hotel & Museum offers local Shepherdstown history.  Open weekends April thru October.
  • Washington Heritage Trail: Drive along the Washington Heritage Trail to take a step into colonial times.
 
Activities:

  • Shopping: German Street is lined with lovely little boutiques, offering hand-made items and unique gifts for your family, friends or yourself yourself.  If you're a world-class shopper looking for bargains, the Prime Outlet Mall near Hagerstown is about 20 minutes away with a variety of high-end outlets such as L.L. Bean, Polo and Waterford/Wedgewood.  The Shepherdstown area is also home to several orchards specializing in fresh fruit goods and seasonal activities - check out Jefferson Orchards and Ridgefield Farm and Orchard.
  • Movie Theater: Enjoy popcorn with real butter and your choice of wine, beer or soda with your movie, just two blocks from the Inn, at the Opera House.  They show an interesting mix of independent and studio films Thursday thru Monday.  Visit their website for schedule info.

    On most Friday nights a quality independent, foreign-language or classic film is shown free of charge by the Shepherdstown Film Society.  Visit their website for schedule and location info.

  • Music/Dancing:
    Mecklenburg Inn
    The Mecklenburg Inn has live music with local talent several nights each week.

    O'Hurley's
    O'Hurley's General Store hosts a free music session every Thursday night at 7:30.  It features local musicians playing mostly Celtic and Appalachian tunes.

    Shepherdstown Music and Dance
    Shepherdstown Music and Dance sponsors an International Concert Series, a regular monthly contra dance, a May Day celebration, special dances and dance & music workshops.

    Shepherd University
    Shepherd University Department of Music features world-class recitals and concerts throughout the year - you can check their schedule at their website.

    Old Opera House

    Contemporary American Theater Festival

  • Hiking: We are just minutes away from the C&O Canal Towpath, and the Appalachian Trail.  The towpath offers flat, relatively easy, hiking and excellent biking while the trail provides the opportunity for more challenging hiking.  We are pleased to offer our hospitality to hikers and bikers from the towpath or trail.  Bike rentals can be arranged through Blue Ridge Outfitters, River Riders and River & Trail Outfitters.
  • Rafting: Rafting, tubing and kayaking on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers are all available locally through Blue Ridge Outfitters, River Riders and River & Trail Outfitters.
  • Golf: If golf is your preferred outdoor activity you can play at nearby Cress Creek Country Club while staying at the Inn.  Please contact us to arrange a tee time for you.
  • Horseback Riding: Guided horseback trail rides can be arranged with Elk Mountain Trails. Reservations are required. For details visit their website.
  • Winery/Vineyard: There are several wineries within a short drive of Shepherdstown. The two closest are Breaux and Windham.
  • Racing: The excitement of horse racing and casino-style gambling is 15 minutes away at Charles Town Races and Slots; sports car racing and motorcycle road racing are on tap at nearby Summit Point Raceway.
