Local Attraction

Moosehead Lake - Maine's Inland Coast and best kept secret. Our international guests call Moosehead Lake a "sea". It is approximately 40 miles long and is almost completely wilderness shoreline. Moosehead Lake offers almost every lake activity imaginable amidst serene beauty. Beautiful mountains surround Moosehead Lake and islands dot its waters. Crystal clear and unpopulated, Moosehead Lake is truly spectacular.

Attractions:

  • Moosehead Lake

With the pristine, scenic wilderness of the Moosehead Lake region at it's front door, Blair Hill Inn is an ideal retreat for comfort craving outdoor enthusiasts!  Winter has arrived and the wonder of it all awaits you.

If you long for a cozy room and a fabulous meal on a chilly evening in New England, then stay with us.  We embrace wintertime!  Ask the inn's activities concierge to arrange a dog sledding ride on a moonlit evening, a guided snowmobile trip to breathtaking vistas know only to the locals, or  cross country skiing on groomed trails that end in a hut warmed by a wood stove sipping a cup of hot soup.  Every outdoor winter activity imaginable is here.  Snowshoeing, ice fishing, sledding... hurry... don't let this winter slip by without experiencing the magic and wonder of it all.

Then, return to Blair Hill Inn and relax by one of the 7 wood burning fireplaces with a glass of wine resting in your hand as you watch the sun set behind the mountains.

Activities:

  • Fishing: Fly-fishing - as featured this summer on an ESPN special, the area is a Fly-fisherman's paradise. Try it on your own or schedule a professional guide to share with you the best area spots and techniques.
  • Whitewater Rafting: rated among the country's top 10 rafting areas, the Penobscot and the Kennebec rivers offer expert to novice level rafting complete with a video of your experience!
  • Hiking: from the rigorous 8 - 10 hour hike up Mount Katahdin (Maine's highest peak) to a more leisurely stroll through Lily Bay State Park, there is a hiking trail for everyone. The 2 hour hike up Mt Kineo with its 700-foot vertical drop deep into the Lake below makes for a special day. An aggressive hike into Gulf Hagas, the 'Grand Canyon' of the East is spectacular.
  • Kayaking: Drive out to a remote 'pond' (anywhere else they'd be called lakes but since they pale in size to Moosehead Lake, the locals call them ponds) and kayak in pristine wilderness. No homesites along the shores and bald eagles soaring overhead provide an almost religious experience you will not soon forget. Bring a picnic lunch and stop on one of the many islands or shoreline to make the day complete.
  • Boating: Rent a Stingray or a pontoon for the day, and you'll begin to realize just how big and remote Moosehead Lake really is! Ride to Pebble Beach at Mt. Kineo and swim for awhile, then motor past the plummeting cliff of Kineo, and dock for lunch on the island. Play a round of golf or head back out for more boating, water skiing or exploring. Truly, this will be a day you won't forget.
  • Airplane Rides: Seaplane rides - Take off in a vintage seaplane across the lake and tour the area from a bird's perspective. Rides can be anywhere from a 1/2 hour to a 4-hour tour. Or, land on a remote 'pond' for a picnic lunch, Fly-fishing and/or canoeing. The seaplane will pick you up later!
  • Golf: Enjoy one of Moosehead Lake Regions two 9-hole golf courses while you're here. Both are along The shores of Moosehead Lake and you may just see a red fox cross the fairway.
  • Wildlife Watching: Moose Safaris - Whether you choose one of the areas slower paced pontoon excursions in search of moose with a drink in hand or prefer to be picked up at the Inn by our private guide and venture via canoe to the back ponds, you can be almost guaranteed to site moose, their young, and other wildlife. A moose safaris is truly a unique Maine experience.
  • Biking: Mountain Biking - Bring your own or rent a bike at the local bike shop and head out for a day of exercise and scenery beyond comparison!
  • Swimming: Relax at Lily Bay State Park beach, Pebble Beach at Mt. Kineo, or visit one of the local public beaches for a refreshing repose in crystal clear waters.
  • Skiing - Downhill: at Squaw Mountain Resort. A beautiful day area with trails carved naturally though the forest and views that rival those of ski resorts in Lake Tahoe! Take it from avid western skiers, we were delighted with the challenge, beauty and no-lift-lines serenity of Squaw.
  • Ski Area: Visit the local groomed trail systems or make your own trails through Lily Bay State Park. Find peace, solitude and beauty just moments from the Inn.
  • Snowshoeing: Rent them here in Greenville, or bring your own. Hike up Blair Hill with a picnic lunch and come back to the Inn for a sunset hot tub and cocktail. It just doesn't get any better!
  • Dog Sledding: An exhilarating experience! Rides can be from 1/2 hour to an all day excursion including lunch in a remote cabin! Mush your own sled or sit back and enjoy the ride. Our guests come back from dog sledding on a natural 'high'.
  • Snowmobiling: Ride the groomed Interconnecting Trail System for hundreds of miles and start right here at the Inn. Riders from around the country say it is hard to beat the beauty and groomed trails found here in Greenville!
  • Sledding: Grab one of the Inn's many sleds or toboggan and simply head down Blair Hill. When the snow is packed right, you fly! A simple, exhilarating pleasure.
  • Ice-skating: Rent skates in town or bring your own and head the outdoor ice rink by the school for some great skating. We made it there 3 times last winter and were the only ones on the ice. That's the advantage of being in a small town!
