Peggy and Grover both hail from the great State of Tennessee originally, and have had very interesting, exciting and eclectic lives. Their paths did not cross until after they were both out of school and pursuing different career interests. Peggy had grown up in Memphis, attended Humes High School with the King, Elvis Presley, while Grover moved to Memphis after finishing high school in Columbia, Tennessee.
They met when Peggy, a retail florist, placed an order for flowers with the Wholesaler Grover was working for. He was smitten immediately just by her voice. A subsequent meeting was set to review the new Christmas Line and they met! The rest is history.
They headed west to San Bernardino, California in 1959. At that time, Peggy was employed by The USAF and had been transferred. While living in Southern California, Grover worked for Sears. 1965 saw a move to Saratoga and a career change for Peggy when she went to work at Lockheed in Sunnyvale. Grover stayed on with Sears and eventually opened a Florist Shop. In their spare time, they spent weekends and vacations at their home in Pine Mountain Lake near the airport. They were one of those "Fly In Couples" and had a home close to the airport. Peggy had received her private pilot's license in 1974 and her instrument rating in 1977 so what better way to beat the traffic!
During one of those weekend getaways, they discovered "Gold" in the form of the Groveland Hotel. It was "For Sale" and once again they were smitten - this time with a property that would become their lifelong labor of love. They purchased "The Best House On The Hill" , as it was called during the Gold Rush Era, in 1990 and in 1991 began a major restoration project. By 1992 they were the proud owners of a beautifully restored historic inn with 17 rooms, all with private baths, meeting facilities, a gourmet restaurant, a bona fide Saloon and a Garden Courtyard. They have been welcoming guests to the Groveland Hotel 365 days a year since 1991 - even during the restoration! Even Lyle, the resident ghost, seems very pleased with the result of the restoration. Lyle's Room, Number 15, is one of the Hotel's most popular and guests will attest to the fact that it is definitely haunted - just try leaving cosmetics on HIS dresser- they don't stay there long!
Naturally, with a property the size of the Groveland Hotel, Peggy and Grover needed a staff to help operate the Inn and to assist them in providing guests with a memorable experience. They sought out employees who could rise to the occasion and as a result have surrounded themselves with highly competent, professional and creative people. Peggy and Grover are dedicated to excellence.
