Our building, which now houses the Glynn House Inn, was originally built by Frank L. Hughes in 1896. As was printed in the "Plymouth Record" in October 1895: "Frank L. Hughes has the frame of his new house up. When finished, Mr. Hughes thinks he will have the best house in town." In July 1896, the Hughes family moved into their new home which was located in an area known as "Millionaire's Row."
Mr. Hughes was born in Groton, Massachusetts, December 1845, but soon moved to Holderness. He worked as a clerk at a local hosiery manufacturer. Here he worked for several years for two shillings a day, boarding at home. The Civil War was being fought and being a patriotic citizen he enlisted in Co. E. of the Twelfth New Hampshire. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, being injured in the latter.
After the war he headed west to Illinois and returned to Ashland in 1871, entering into partnership with his former employer under the name of Hughes & Shepard, a dry goods retailer of some renown. He married Elizabeth Addie and had one son named Elmer.
The house was the residence of a number of prominent local families over the years and was established as a bed and breakfast in 1989. It has grown over the past years and now boasts a total of thirteen rooms. The Carriage House was added to the main building in the 1920's and later moved to its' present location some 150 feet behind the main house.
