History

The stately mansion that is now the main house of the Crowne Pointe Historic Inn & Spa was built near the turn of the 19th Century for a prosperous sea captain of the Provincetown Harbor. The carriage houses that stand behind the main residence, believed to have housed numerous fishermen once upon a time, were constructed shortly after.

Since the early 1920’s, the main house has been known as a place where travelers could rest their heads. Over the following decades, as Provincetown became less the bustling harbor town and more the vibrant resort village, the mansion and carriage houses endured many alterations, until such time that the current owners purchased the properties in January of 1999. The new owners - builders and restoration enthusiasts - saw a "diamond in the rough." That one chance to pursue a life-long dream.

On January 11, 1999, The Crowne Pointe team launched an elaborate restoration and full-scale renovation of the six buildings that now constitute Crowne Pointe & and its on site award winning Shui Spa. With only four months until high season, all hands turned industriously to the main house for its anticipated opening in May of that year.

The clock was ticking, construction crews worked seven days a week, from sun up until long past sun down, in the effort to put Crowne Pointe back together. At times, as many as 60 people were working on the site on one day. At the end of a shift, one painting crew would deboard the scaffolding only to let the next crew on.

One of the most arduous tasks for the team of artisans and carpenters was to salvage key architectural remnants of the original buildings, then piece them back together so as to be artfully blended with new period-inspired renovation. Often it was necessary for the team to re-create, on site, the house's original gingerbread character, copying designs as they were found.

No stone was left unturned in the detail category, from paint colors, authentic Victorian wallpapers, garden flowers, from the carefully restored banister of the parlor staircase, to the graceful coffered tin and wood moldings, to the antique belt-driven fans on the newly expanded two-story front porch.

The Crowne Pointe Family welcomes you to enjoy the handsome fruition of their dream. Whether you choose to come in the summer for the sand and surf of the nearby beaches and harbor, or prefer our exquisite shoulder seasons in which to enjoy the charm and history of Provincetown, your stay at Crowne Pointe Historic Inn & Spa will be an unforgettable experience, one filled with good friends, good food and cherished memories.
