Step up to the wickered porch of Albergo Allegria and enter the grace and repose of another century. Victoriana in its full detail is the architectural and decorative theme that innkeepers Lenore and Vito Radelich have preserved through this 21 room bed & breakfast inn.
The Radelich's have taken two of the original cottages of the former Osborn House, a summer vacation complex built in 1876 which swelled to a capacity of 300 summer tourists in the early part of the century. The Osborn House property changed owners several times and over time was sadly neglected. Imagining their former glory, Lenore and Vito purchased two of the homes and began work on these Victorian Ladies.
"Cottage 2", as it was named, is now the front of the inn pictured in most photos. This house, with the original stone foundation, porch & spindles; has not moved since it was built.
The sister house "Cottage 1" was originally located 200 feet to the right. In 1984 the cottage, with all its dishes resting in their cupboards, was moved in tact 400 feet. Remarkably, nothing was damaged and Lenore and Vito attentively rescued all salvageable wood, stained glass and even corner moldings. A newly built section joined these two structures, painstakingly echoing the keyhole windows, gingerbread trim and carefully painted woodwork of the originals.
The project was lovingly completed after two years and named Albergo Allegria, Italian for the Inn of Happiness. Furnished with period wallpapers and antiques throughout, all 16 bedrooms offer guests cozy down comforters, plush carpeting and modern conveniences of full private baths, TVs with VCR and telephones. The twelve guest rooms are named after the 12 months of the year and the four suites after the 4 seasons. The Master Suite boasts a king size bed with featherbed, full sunken-in double Jacuzzi and an antique wedding certificate dated back to 1899.
Most recently, the former Osborn House horse stables were transformed into 5 Carriage House Suites. Opened to guests on December 24th 1996, these deluxe rooms are located just behind the inn and provide exquisite accommodations for seekers of privacy and indulgence. Each room has a king size bed, 15 foot cathedral ceiling with skylight, double whirlpool tub and gaslight fireplace surrounded with marble. Each room named after a different herb, the Carriage House Suites overlook wild thyme fields and are just a stone's throw from the Batavia Kill River. With their own courtyard, garden view and outdoor lounge, these Suites offer summer guests the peaceful luxuriance of the surrounding Northern Catskill Mountains.
The Inn's ground floor parlor is spacious and inviting. This lounge boasts a large cherry mantled fireplace; providing a warm, cozy place to relax with a bottle of wine or a cup of tea. Enjoy the 24-hour guest pantry where you can help yourself to a hot cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or complimentary soft drinks and sweets. Afternoon tea is served on Saturday's and weekend holiday periods in the parlor.
