Built in 1913 by architect Irving Gill as a residence for the Kaust family, the Inn is a registered Historical Site and one of the finest examples of Gill's "Cubist" style architecture. Irving Gill was a student of Louis Sullivan and one of the first to use tilt-slab construction. The lovely, tranquil gardens of the Inn were originally planned by renowned horticulturist, Kate Sessions, who was responsible for landscaping Balboa Park. The family of the famous composer-conductor John Philip Sousa resided in the home for 8 years during the 1920's. There are nine guest rooms in the original house and six in the annex. The guest will find the inn airy and sunny with horizon ocean and garden views from the inn and some of its guest rooms. Recently updated the Inn is furnished in classically elegant country style, each room having its own theme, color scheme and personality. All are embellished with antiques, decorative accessories, and exquisite art work exuding a European ambiance and old world charm. Flowers abound inside and out.
