- Fonthill: (Doylestown)
The spectacular home of Henry Mercer, Fonthill is a grand castle built entirely of hand-mixed concrete. It has 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 32 stairwells and more than 200 windows of every size and shape. The lavishly embellished interior surfaces show an incredible array of Mercer's original decorative tiles. Well worth the trip-even for the second or third time. Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 12-5
- Moravian Tile Works: (Doylestown)
A working history museum and National Historic Landmark, the building itself reflects the Spanish influence on mission architecture. See Mercer tiles being produced by original methods. Self-guided tours. Unique and fascinating. Daily 10-4:45pm.
- James Michener Museum: (Doylestown)
A wonderful small art museum. Works by Pennsylvania impressionists, 19th and 20th century art, sculpture, as well as changing exhibitions. Tues-Fri 10-4:30, Sat & Sun 10-5.
- Pearl S. Buck House: (Perkasie, PA, near Doylestown)
"One of the most beautiful day trips you can take", according to Philadelphia Magazine. The wonderful 1835 stone farmhouse where the Pulitzer and Nobel prize winning novelist and humanitarian lived with her family for 38 years. Tues-Sat 11-2.
- Sand Castle Winery: (Erwinna, PA)
Offers various tours of their winery, including educational and entertaining barrel tasting tours. The winery is located about 7 miles north on Route 32. 1-800-722-9463

Activities:
- Antique Shopping: For
antiquing in Lambertville, we like the shops on Union and Bridge streets.
They run the gamut from rustic country to fine European classics. One
of our favorites is The People's Store, a 40-shop antique cooperative,
at the corner of Church and Union. It is Lambertville's oldest and largest
affordable antique center. If you're like us, you won't leave empty-handed.

Across the river
in Pennsylvania, there are a multitude of shops along Route 202 (known
locally as "Antiques Row"). Just take 202 from New Hope towards Doylestown
and stop wherever the urge strikes you.
Rice's
Market (New Hope)
This 30-acre outdoor flea market is one of the oldest in the country,
selling everything from antiques and linens to plants and crafts. You
can also purchase authentic Amish goods at Rice's. Tuesdays and Saturdays,
7-1 (all year long).
The Golden Nugget

One of the East Coast's finest antique markets. 40 inside shops and

What was once a chicken farm is now home to 75 quality specialty shops
and restaurants, on 42 acres of colorful gardens and winding brick walkways.
The charming shopping village includes a number of 18th century buildings
which were moved to the site.
New Hope and
Lambertville
Centered on and around Main Street, downtown New Hope offers a wide
variety of shops and galleries. Across the river in Lambertville, the
shopping is concentrated along Bridge and Union Streets.
Phillip's Fine
Wines, Stockton
(The real reason we moved to Stockton…) The New York Times called Phillip's
"the top wine store in New Jersey." A great place to find that rare
wine or just browse.

Glass designed and built the stained glass windows in our Garden Cottage
guest room.

is fabulous here! If you like flat, smooth, shady biking, try the towpath
which goes for some 40 miles along the Delaware River in New Jersey.
It's just down the hill from the inn. More trails await you across the
river in Pennsylvania.
If you like hills
and scenic countryside, there are routes right from the inn that take
you along streams, over a covered bridge and along grand ridges with
views of rolling farmland in every direction. We will be glad to help
you plan your route.
Bike Rental
Bikes can be rented at a number of locations within just a few miles
of the inn.
Lumberville
General Store on Route 32, across the river in Pennsylvania, just
a few miles north. 215-297-5388
New Hope Cyclery,
will deliver bikes to the Inn for extended rental. 215-862-6888. - Walking: A
great trail for walking or running, the Delaware River towpath goes
for some 40 miles along the river. You can walk from the Inn to the
towpath and then to center-city Stockton (left on towpath) or visit
Prallsville Mills (right on towpath) and continue all the way to Bulls
Island State Park if you like.
"Sidewalk strolling"
is great both in Lambertville and across the bridge in New Hope. Frenchtown,
NJ is another great river town to explore on foot just about 10 miles
north.
Outdoor
enthusiasts might wish to hike along the cliffs in Ralph Stover State
Park near Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania (about 5 miles north) for
beautiful creek and valley views, or visit Bowman's
Hill Wildflower Preserve, 2 ½ miles south of New Hope. It offers
walking on 26 trails through 100 acres of woods and meadows.

offers various packages and times. - Canoeing/Kayaking: Water Sports on
the Delaware River (Canoeing, Tubing, Rafting, Kayaking)
Bucks
Country River Country is about 5 miles away and offers water activities
of all kinds. You can canoe in the canal, float lazily down the river
on a hot summer day, or head down the river on a raft. Kayaking is also
available. - Golf: There are a number
of golf courses of varying difficulty nearby. Carolyn and Bob's favorite is:

Pine
Creek Miniature Golf
One of the largest miniature golf courses in the country, Pine Creek
offers 2 challenging 18-hole miniature golf courses over acres of countryside,
lighted for night play. 609-466-3803. - Horseback Riding: Trail rides can
be arranged at West End Farm, about 2 miles away near New Hope. The
trail follows the river and the ride is guided. Note: the pace for these
rides is relatively slow--it is more of a leisurely walk along the river
than a "wild ride" through fields and forests. 215-862-5883.
- Tours: Pleasure
driving in the area is beautiful in any season. One of our favorite
drives is River Road in Pennsylvania, which follows the Delaware River.
You can drive up river on the Pennsylvania side of the river, cross
the bridge to Frenchtown and return on the New Jersey side. Wandering
on any of the back roads in Hunterdon or Bucks County is just about
guaranteed to be scenic.
- Train Ride: Black River and
Western Railroad (Flemington, NJ)
Scenic steam or diesel train rides through Hunterdon County on vintage
coaches from April through December, Saturday and Sunday at 11:30, 1:00
2:30 and 4:00.
New
Hope and Ivyland Railroad (New Hope)
Steam
train between New Hope and Lahaska runs every hour on a 9 mile, 50 minute
narrated adventure featuring Pauline's Trestle (The Perils of Pauline)
and scenic countryside. Evening dinner trains and Sunday brunch trains
also.
