The Willard Street Inn was built in 1881 for Charles W. Woodhouse, a prominent businessman and Vermont State Senator. Tall double front doors with brass handles and beveled glass provide a grand entrance to the spacious foyer where you are surrounded by beautiful cherry wood paneling on its walls, coffered ceiling, and impressive staircase.
Today, the impressive brick mansion retains its marble detail, tower and turret, 4 chimneys, slate roof, and two sweeping exterior marble staircases which descend to the flower and herb gardens below. Inside, high ceilings, intricate moldings, wood floors, fireplaces and plant-filled sunny solarium hearken back to another era. Upon entering the cherry-paneled foyer with its glowing crystal chandelier, one can almost imagine the grand turn-of-the-century parties which Mr. Woodhouse might have hosted.
The mansion was a private home for its first one hundred years with several owners after the Woodhouse family. In 1996, Gordon and Beverly Watson transformed the residence into the Willard Street Inn. With painstaking detail, the house has been renovated and restored to its original splendor. Now ten years later, Innkeepers Larry & Katie Davis welcome guests to one of Burlington's premier inns in the heart of the city's exquisite Hill Section.
