History

History of The Goldmoor

In the early 1800's, riverboat captains rounding the bend of the Mississippi River near Galena would gaze toward "Signal Point" to find a fire signaling them to stop for firewood to fuel their boats. As in those early days, the property known as "Signal Point" still commands an unsurpassed view of the River, in fact, Jim Goldthorpe found that view so "Inn-spiring" that he purchased the property and created "The Goldmoor".

Jim purchased this country estate in the early 1980's - captivated by the wooded hillsides, the secluded area and, of course, the magnificent view of the Mississippi River Valley. Originally built as a country home for an heir to the Firestone fortune, the home now known as The Goldmoor has been extensively enlarged and improved . . . improved to the status of being the American Bed & Breakfast Association's #1 rated Inn in Illinois since 1993 to present and most recently being selected as a member to the prestigious group Select Registry of Distinguished Inns of North America.

Beginning with two modest guest rooms, guests found the exact setting and solitude. As business steadily grew, guest accommodations were expanded to include four deluxe guest suites and two luxury guest rooms. Following industry trends closely, guests were privided the amenities that visitors requested most often, like whirlpools, fireplaces, galley kitchen areas, and entertainment units. Guests frequent comments and suggestions, has made The Goldmoor the leading small lodging property in the area. This unforgettable setting, perched high above the River, nestled in lush woods, surrounds you with a peaceful, fresh, 'slow-down' feeling.

Several enhancements have appeared at The Goldmoor including completion of a secluded garden, a pavillions for weddings and outdoor entertainemnt in addition to the gazebo situated on the hill overlooking the Mississippi, which offer weddings and small celebrations a new home. Three private country cottages, The English, The French and The Irish, known as Aaron's Country Cottages and Aaron's Log Cabins, two contemporary log cabins, opened in the summer of 1999. In 2006, the Goldmoor expanded once again to include the Lodge and to redesign the exising main inn. A whole new facility was added with 6 deluxe suite including a two story turret suite with all the usual and elegant amenities.
