Cooperstown is home to a myriad of attractions. Many visitors are initially lured by baseball, but return to enjoy the village's other enticements: picturesque scenery, a clear cool lake, quaint historic architecture, fine museums, world-class opera, golfing or other outdoor recreation. After touring, it is fun to poke around for antiques or stop to appreciate locally brewed beers. There's more to see and do than a one-day visit allows. Whether you enjoy snow-tubing, biking, or garden tours, Cooperstown has something for every season.

Our award-winning historic hotel is ideally situated to enjoy all that Cooperstown offers. We're just a short walk to one of America's best loved main streets where you'll find unique shops, restaurants and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It is a brief trolley ride to experience another century at The Farmers' Museum, where exhibits, a recreated village and costumed staff depict life over 150 years ago. Nearby, Fenimore Art Museum displays a premier collection of American Indian art, American paintings and folk art. Beyond the village, you will find Glimmerglass Opera, the Glimmerglass State Park and many other treasures.


Attractions:

  • The Farmers' Museum: At this living history museum, visitor step back in time and experience life in the mid-19th century rural New York. Here, skilled artisans rekindle traditions of the past including blacksmithing, spinning and weaving, broom making, wood working and printing. You can visit a farmstead typical of 150 years ago with heritage animal breeds and period botanical specimens. Walk through a re-created village with homes and other buildings including a bark log house, tavern and general store. Open April through November. Offering many special events and children's activities. Located one mile from the center of Cooperstown.
  • Fenimore Art Museum: Housed in an elegant 1930 mansion with terraced gardens overlooking Otsego Lake, this museum is a showcase of a premier collection of American art. Exhibits feature North American Indian art, folk art, paintings from the Hudson River School and more. Gallery tours and multimedia programs are offered daily. Families especially enjoy exploring the Mohawk Indian Bark House on the shores of Otsego lake. The museum is open April through December.
  • Glimmerglass Opera: Glimmerglass Opera presents a summer festival season each July and August. Productions range from unusual interpretations of popular works to rarely seen early operas and modern masterpieces. Performances in the intimate 900-seat Busch Theater make any show at Glimmerglass a memorable experience.
  • National Baseball Hall of Fame: This museum is one of America's favorite destinations and surely the best-known sports shrine in the world. The Baseball Hall of Fame is the definitive repository of the game's treasures. It is filled with the stories and legends of the sport. Artifacts, films and photographs capture the excitement of the game, embody the heroism of its players and reflect the spirit of America. Open year round.
  • Walt: Rarely can the public visit an early 1800s country mansion that is a restoration in progress. The 50 room mansion, north of the village of Cooperstown is noted as one of the "most remarkable buildings in America." Tours and exhibits provide a glimpse into the history of this neo-classical estate dating from 1817. A Visitor Center, spacious grounds and the adjacent state park on Otsego Lake provide fine entertainment for an afternoon visit.
  • Glimmerglass State Park: open to the public and located ten miles away at the north end of Otsego Lake, this park offers a sandy beach, changing area, playground, hiking trails, picnic areas and campsites. A day-fee is charged for parking. For information call 547-8662.

  • Leatherstocking Theater Company
  • Cinema: The closest movie theaters are located in Oneonta, 25 miles south of Cooperstown. The Inn subscribes to newspapers with current movie listings.
 
Activities:

  • Tennis: There are courts available for public use nearby. To learn about tennis options in a short walk, ask at The Inn staff.
  • Beach: A public beach with life guards and changing rooms is located at the Glimmerglass State Park.
  • Biking: There are many roads suitable for bike riding in the area. For routes and mileage consult the book, Cooperstown Cranks, found in the Inn's library. Rental bikes are available in the area.
  • Swimming: Guests may swim year-round in the Olympic-size pool at the Clark Sport Center. A day-fee is charged for the use of the pool. Swimming is permitted in the clean, cool waters of Otsego Lake. A public beach and changing rooms are provided at Glimmerglass State Park.
  • Boating: Sail boats, canoes, and motorized boats may be rented at Sam Smith's Boat Yard from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. For information, call 607-547-2543.
  • Golf: Three public golf courses offer beautiful settings and various golf options. Leatherstocking Golf Club; a challenging 18 hole course, with driving range. 607-547-5275. Meadow Links Golf Course is an executive length course about 14 miles from Cooperstown with driving range and natural grass tees. 315-858-1646. Otsego Golf Club established in 1894 at the north end of Otsego Lake, has nine holes and spectacular views. Call 607-547-9290.
  • Skiing - Cross Country: Cross-country skiing is possible when snow conditions are favorable. Equipment can be rented locally at Mt. Otsego Ski Shop (607-547-2203) and trail recommendations can be provided by staff.
  • Lake / River / Ocean: Otsego Lake is a major focal point for the area. Headwaters for the Susquehanna River, it is a site for fishing, boating, swimming and snow sports in winter.
  • Baseball: Visiting teams play at Doubleday Field throughout the season. A schedule of games is available from the Village office at 607-547-2411. Class A NY-Penn League games featuring the Oneonta Tigers are played at Damaschke Field in Oneonta. For information call 607-432-6326.
  • Fitness: The Clark Sport Center is a modern sports facility featuring a gym with basketball courts and running track, bowling, Olympic pool, fitness and aerobic rooms, squash and racquetball courts, rock climbing and ropes course. For schedule and fees call 607-547-2800.
  • Running: Cooperstown is a popular place for outdoor jogging. Routes are described in the book, Running the Leatherstocking Trails, located in The Inn's library.
