Local Attraction

The Briars is beautifully situated on the south shore of Lake Simcoe. Toronto and its many attractions are just an hour away. Local attractions - The Red Barn Theatre which features live performances from June to September. Lake Simcoe is renowned for fishing year round for perch, white fish and several other fresh water fish. Boats can be rented at the local marina. Antique shops and artisans are sprinkled throughout the community and make for a nice afternoon of exploring by car. St. Georges Church and Sharon Temple are interesting historical sites. The region is famous for golf and many of Canada's most outstanding courses are within a one hour drive. The Briars was named Ontario's top small golf resort in 2003, and the Briars Golf Club is a jewel designed by Stanley Thompson and Robbie Robinson, two of Canada's foremost golf architects.

Spring and Autumn Activities: The Briars is on sparkling Lake Simcoe (named 'Shining Waters' by the first peoples). Our resort guests enjoy its warm sunshine and glorious sunsets. Feeders like the Black River, which passes through The Briars property, provide sanctuaries for wildlife.

In warm times, you can explore the lake and river aboard the Lady Simcoe, our replica of a 1920 fantail launch, or use your skills with canoe or kayak. On foot or by bike you can travel the lakeshore road, watching the lake cycle. Feel the sun and the breezes, smell the clean air, listen to the waves and the birds. Something is always happening in the lake.

The sanctuary extends to our fields and forest, lawns and gardens. You can explore these by foot, sun yourself in a chaise, or frustrate your friends with the skilled use of a croquet mallet! Volleyball, shuffleboard, boules, badminton, horseshoes, four outdoor plexipave tennis courts (two are lit) and other games are available about the property.

Indoors, you can also pump up in the exercise studio or stretch out in our indoor solarium pool. Enjoy the whirlpool and sauna to salve your stresses. The games room with billiards, ping-pong, foosball, darts, shuffleboard and other games is a great place to get together. Curl up in front of a crackling fireplace in one of our many living rooms, or watch the world evolve from the observation floors of our tower.

Still stressed? The Spa is the place to be, with a full range of services to help you feel and look better.

"the best golf course, in the best shape, and with the best set-up that I have played this season"
Bob Panasik, an 11-time participant in the PGA US Open, describing The Briars Golf Course, June 2002

Golf has been a Briars tradition since 1922 when the original 9-hole course was designed by Stanley Thompson, Canada's premier golf course architect. In 1971, the Golf Club directors contracted another of Canada's notable golf course architects, C.E. "Robbie" Robinson, to expand the course to 18 holes.
His work resulted in a Par 71 challenge, well protected greens, rolling fairways, water hazards, and magnificent Black River vistas. Throughout the course development, the Golf Club directors ensured preservation of the majestic pine and maple trees which provide sanctuary to some of the 140 species of birds that are found throughout The Briars properties.
There's a well stocked Pro Shop and a resident teaching pro. The pro offers a variety of lessons and skill improvement drills.

The award from Canada's Golf Course Ranking Magazine places us among Canada's finest golf resorts. Spring/Summer edition, 1999
