About This Property

This year we are celebrating our 35st year in business and we are proud to be recognized as one of the first B&B's in the United States.

From our first sight of the Mainstay Inn (originally called Jackson’s Clubhouse), we were intrigued because so many original features had survived through the years. Elaborate gasoliers hung from ornate plaster medallions and many of the lovely furnishings belonging to the Clubhouse were still in place. The building had a feeling of grandeur like no other in town, which was recognized by a reporter for the Cape May Ocean Wave in 1872.

Restoration of the Mainstay was a challenge but also a joy because we had the help of so many friends and because the final results of our work was appreciated by so many.

In 1980 we were fortunate to acquire the Mainstay Cottage, our neighboring property built in 1870 and designed by the same architect, Stephen Decatur Button. Six of our most popular rooms and suites are in this building which is joined to the Inn by a brick walkway traversing a lovely garden complete with a Victorian fountain..
