About Beaufort

About Beaufort, South Carolina

Beaufort, South Carolina was called the most aristocratic town of its size in America before the War between the States. Beaufort historic antebellum mansions grace the downtown area with shady live oak trees hanging with Spanish Moss. Many of these mansions have been the sites for films, including "The Prince of Tides", "Forrest Gump" and "The Big Chill."

Depending on the time of year, the marsh changes, from a brilliant green in summer to gold in fall, and brown in winter. The beauty of the town and the graciousness of the people that have made Beaufort their home leaves an everlasting impression on our visitors. While strolling down Bay St. or in the Waterfront Park, you will always receive a warm and friendly greeting from those you meet.

There are wonderful galleries, antique shops, restaurants and cafes where excellent local cuisine is served.

The Beaufort Historic Society, conducts their the Tour of Homes every fall and St. Helena Episcopal Church hosts the spring Home and Plantation tour.

Our award-winning state park, Hunting Island is only 17 miles from downtown Beaufort.

Beaufort is located approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Charleston, SC, 1 hour from Savannah, Ga., and Hilton Head SC, and is 4 and 1/2 hours from Atlanta, GA.
