About This Property

There are certain experiences in life that cannot be duplicated. Sitting before a breath-taking view on a porch above a garden in full bloom. Walking along moss-lined trails, beside wild azaleas and underneath 20' blooming rhododendron that span overhead like a cathedral ceiling. Contemplating gentle peaks that poke through rosy morning fog. Wrapping yourself in a hand-woven coverlet, listening to spring showers as you warm your toes and read by firelight.

The Swag is a place for rest, rejuvenation, romance, discovery, and recreation. With wonderful panoramic views, we are located high above Waynesville, North Carolina (about 50 minutes west of Asheville).

Built out of century-old hand hewn logs and located atop a 5,000 foot mountain ridge, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just a step beyond our backyard.  You might see a black bear during your stay with us. They are beautiful vegetarian creatures who are indigenous to the region. As you enjoy our lodge, rooms, and common areas, you're sure to notice the black bear motif in many carvings, artifacts, and on Swag mementoes.

We love pets -- but in response to requests from people with allergies, we do not allow cats and dogs in guest bedroms.  Please call us for a recommendation for a fine kennel in our area.

Originally designed as a family and spiritual retreat by owners Dan and Deener Matthews, this refuge is an award-winning country inn surrounded by 250 acres. We offer luxurious rooms, wonderful food, interesting conversation, and a range of remarkable experiences.

Expand your horizons during our special events: making things in hands-on workshops or participating in sessions led by renowned authors and naturalists.

The Swag is currently celebrating 24 years of award-winning excellence
