About This Property

Welcome to the Snowbird Mountain Lodge, an unspoiled, hidden vacation oasis tucked away in the southern Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. This rustic, yet elegant mountain retreat rests among 100 acres of undisturbed mountaintop in Graham County, North Carolina, just eleven miles from the town of Robbinsville.

Built during the years 1939 thru 1941, the historic lodge is constructed of native stone in shades of warm gray to molten yellow and many varieties of native hardwoods including chestnut, butternut, wild cherry, and basswood. Each of the spacious guestrooms in the Main Lodge is paneled in a different hardwood while the library and lobby are constructed mainly of wormy chestnut and American chestnut. A massive stone fireplace and a large picture window with a spectacular view of the Snowbird Mountains are the focal points in the library. The wild cherry paneled dining room boasts another huge stone fireplace as well as beautifully crafted tables and chairs made by local crafters for the Lodge's opening in 1941.

The true beauty of the Main Lodge building is the view. The front terrace, constructed of native stone and large timber railings, offers a panorama of mountain views. Complete with big, comfortable rockers and picnic tables, the front terrace is the perfect place to enjoy lunch, have a conversation with a new friend, or read a book from Snowbird's extensive library.

Our Wolfe Cottage and new Chestnut Lodge maintain the natural look of the Snowbird Mountain Lodge while offering additional amenities such as private decks and porches, gas fireplaces, and special bath facilities. The views rival those from the Lodge.

Take an early morning walk on the Point Trail to watch the sun rise over the mountains and Lake Santeetlah. Sunsets over Joyce Kilmer can be viewed from the deck at Margaret's Place. Enjoy these unique vistas without getting into your car.

Graham County offers a wide range of activities for our guests. The new Cherohala Skyway begins at the entrance to the Snowbird Lodge and winds its way to remote mile-high mountain tops. Hiking trails through the virgin forests of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest are only minutes away. Lake Santeetlah with its many recreational opportunites is just a short drive down the mountain.

For the more adventurous we have mountain bicycles, canoes, and touring kayaks for rent. With most of the county national forest there are numerous places to get close to nature as you exercise. Enjoy your lunch on a mountain top, at a secluded waterfall, or on an island in Lake Santeetlah. Build-up an appetite for your hearty Snowbird Mountain Lodge dinner.

We look forward to hosting your stay with us. Some guests have been returning for more than 50 years - others are just discovering the Snowbird. With such a variety of activities we are confident that everyone will find their personal way to enjoy the Snowbird Mountain Lodge.
