Evening meals at Gabrielle's evoke a spirit of high elegance. Tables are double-clothed. White napkins flank china trimmed in wine and gold. Dark, heavy paneling encases the dining rooms. Live dinner music on the piano conveys diners to an era long past.

I spent some time after the meal in one of the porch rockers, savoring the mountain air and reflecting on the visit. The overall Richmond Hill experience reached the outstanding level.

The overall Richmond Hill experience ranks among the finest North Carolina has to offer. Hence a five-star rating, the seventh time I have awarded a fifth star in 17 years of reviewing.
