Ingredients
- Loaf of French Bread cut 1 1/2 inches thick.
- 6 eggs, beaten
- 1/8 tsp. Nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. Cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. Mace or a rounded
- (or 1/2 tsp. of Pumpkin Spice in lieu of the 3 spice ingredients)
- 1 tsp. Vanilla
- 3 cups half and half (to cut calories, substitute half milk)
Preparation
Generously butter or spray 9 x 13 baking dish and place bread slices in a single layer.
Combine eggs, spices, vanilla and cream and mix well. Pour over the bread slices, wait for 5 minutes and turn over each piece.
Cover and refrigerate overnight or at least for a couple of hours to allow absorbtion. Before baking, turn bread slices to absorb additional egg mix.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Set pan out on counter while oven is preheating. Bake for 20 minutes. remove from oven and add topping and return to oven for another 20 minutes.
Topping: firm butter, dark corn syrup or pancake syrup, brown sugar and your favorite type of nut (we use pecans or English walnuts).
Place pats of butter, spoon on brown sugar and pour on syrup and sprinkle nuts and put back in the oven.
We generally add a little more syrup when plating to serve.
